3月22日（木）京王プラザホテル札幌（扇の間）にて西山製麺（株）社長の西山隆司氏をお迎えしランチョン講演会を開催。西山社長は奥様、ご子息、お嬢様を伴って参加下さった。講演タイトルは「サッポロ西山ラーメン誕生の秘話と海外展開～札幌Ramen文化を世界に！～で、西山製麺の歴史（1955年に札幌で生ラーメンを開発）して以来、日本以外の欧州事業拡大のためドイツ・デユツセルフドルフにSapporo Nishiyama Europe GmbHを設立。2014年には、アメリカのデラウエア州とニューヨークにSapporo Nishiyama U.S.A.,Inc.に現地法人を設立。また、サウジアラビア、ドバイ、トルコ、クエートなどにも地上調査をを展開するなど、札幌発のグローバル食品を企業を目指すようだ。加えて、西山会長は在札幌米国総領事館のロナルド・ガイダック(1960-63）領事も札幌味噌の愛好家で「味の三平」の常連であった秘話も紹介。ライチェル・ブルーネット・チェン主席領事にとってもビッグ・サプライズとなった。

On March 22(Thu.),we invited Mr. Takashi Nishiyama(a AJSH member) as a guest speaker for the talk entitled “Nishiyama Seimen(Ltd.) ‘s family  history  dating back to 1955, together with the best kept secret  of Nihiyama style Ramen.   Mr Nishiyama’s family–his wife, his son, and his daughter–also atteded the luncheon meeting.  His talk also centered around how he had developed and inovated his business strategies, and Sapporo Ramen  Culture beyond Sapporo in the global business sphere— Sapporo Nishiyama Europe GmbH  in Germany,  Sapporo Nishiyama U.S.A.,Inc. in Delaware in 2014. ,and Nishiyama Ramen U.S.A. in New York . Mr. Nishiyama also coducted marketing research visiting some parts of the world, including Saudi Arabia, Dobai, Turkey.  Another best-kept secret story for us, especially  Principal Officer of the U.S. Consulate General Rachel-san, was when he touched upon this story— the former Consul, Ronald A.Gaiduk was madly in love with Sapporo Miso Ramen and became a frequent visiter to Ajino Sanpei Ramen Store.

１月２５日ニューイヤーズ・コンサートNew Years’ Concert  2018

１月２５日（木）に札幌グランドホテル「Ginsen」

今年のニューイヤーズ・コンサートも藤田　道子副会長の企画でソプラノ歌手の千田三千世さんとピアニストの斎藤智奈美さんを迎えての新年祝賀の演奏会「新春・午後のクラシックと名曲」を開催しました。

Inviting guest Soprano singer Michiyo Chida and a pianist Chinami Saito through the effrts of Vice Chair Michiko Fujita, 2018’s first New Years’ Concert  program got undeway in Rm. Ginsen  at Sapporo Grand Hotel on January 25.

エルビス・プレスリーのグラミー賞受賞曲の「アメイジング・グレイス」，映画サウンド・オブ・ミュージックの中で歌われた名曲「エーデル・ワイス」，山田耕作作曲・北原白秋作詞の日本の名曲「この道」その他とアンコール曲として1972年の札幌冬季オリンピックの主題歌でトワエ・モアが唄った「雪と虹とバラード」に参加者達は酔いしれた。多くの会員からも「４６年前の札幌オリンピックと若かりしき頃の自分を懐かしく想い起しました」とのコメントも賜った。

The audience was charmed and enchanted by their music performace. The famous songs “Amazing Grace”–the award winning songd by Elvis Presley, Edelweiss out of the movie, The Sound of Music, a very famous “Kono Michi(This Road)” composed by Kosaku Yamada and lyricist by Hakushu Kitahara, others and Yuki to Niji no Ballad(Snow & RAanbow  Ballad)” by Towae More(known as Japanese Karpenters) as an enchore number captured their hearts.  This song brought us back fond memoroes of Sapporo Winter Olympic Games–46 years ago(the year 1972)

The 3rd International Youth Forum,Sapporo on Nov.5(Sun),2017

2017年11月5日に京王プラザホテル札幌にて、姉妹州のマサチューセッツからのゲスト・スピーカーをお招きし，北海道日米協会主催「第3回 国際ユースフォーラム札幌大会」が開催されました。お陰様で盛大なうちにIYは終了しました（ 当日の様子については 下記の写真を御覧下さい。(On the IYF activities, see the photos below.）

先ずは，御協力下さった共催の北海道国際交流・協力総合センター（HIECC）,後援の在札幌米国領事館，伊藤組１００年記念基金，それに協賛の北海道コカ・コーラボトリング株式会社,　株式会社ロイズコンフェクト，サッポロビール株式会社，株式会社いまい，加えて，協力団体の京王プラザ 札幌，札幌国際プラザ，SEAには心より御礼申し上げます。

また，今回のIYFに参加下さった北海道札幌国際情報高校，清田高校，北嶺中高等学校，札幌第一高校，札幌聖心女子学院高校，北海道インターナショナル・スクール（HIS）の先生方と生徒さん，それに選抜された大学生達（北海道大学，札幌大学，札幌科学大学，藤女子大学・他）hokkaidou と道日米協会の参加者にも，心より感謝申し上げます。最後に，IYF札幌の布施正樹（実行委員長），小笠原はるの（副実行委員長），小林俊三（メディア企画担当），バリー・ラツリフ（北海道インターナショナルスクール校長），高橋稀典・対木孝成・渡辺慶人ら青年部会委員にも御礼申し上げます。

The 3rd International Youth Forum(IYF), Sapporo was held on Nov. 5 at o Keio Plaza Hotel,Sapporo–inviting a special guest from our Sister State, Masachusetts .

Profound thanks go our to the HIECC(co-sponsor), together with  The U.S.Consulate General,Sapporo, The Ito Gumi  Foundation. We also would like to extend our thanks to the follwoing  supporters: Hokkaito Coca-Cola Bottling Co.Ltd, Sapporo Breweries Ltd, Imai Ltd. as supporters. Keio Plazsa Hotel,Sapporo, Sapporo International Communication Plaza Foundation, and SEA coorporated us a great deal.

Most of all, our deep apprecaiations go not only to high school students and teachers of —Hokkaido Sapporo Kokusai Joho high school, Kiyota high school, Hokurei junior-high school, Sapporo Daiichi high school,  Sapporo Sacred-heart girls high school—but also to HIS students and  and selected members of college students rainsing from Hokkaido University, Sapporo University, Hokkaido Kagaku (Science)University, Fuji Women’s University,etc. and the AJSH members-—- who actively and vigorously participated in the IYF this year.  We’d like to thank Mr. Masaki Fuse(Director of IYF), Dr. Haruno Ogasawara(Vice Director of IYF), Shunzo Kobayashi(Media&Planning), Barry Ratzuliff(Head Master of HIS), Mr. Maresuke Takahasih, Mr. Takanari Tsuiki , Mr. Yoshihito Watanabe.

ゲストにはドキュメンタリー映画「Paper Lanterns」のプロデューサーでボストン日本協会名誉理事長であるPeter Grilli（ピーター・グリーリー）氏を迎え、学生とのディスカッションにも参加していただきました。グリーリーさんからは，今回の日本訪問で最高の想い出となり，啓発された札幌スタイルの国際ユースフォラム(IYF)の感想が届きました。IYF札幌スタイルについては，ボストン日本協会，アメリカ，東京や京都の日米協会多数の関係者達にも紹介された。

An invited guest speaker was Mr. Peter Grilli,a movie producer and  President Emeritus of Japan Boston Society,–from our Sister State Massachusetts. Peter-san visited here with his wife Suzan, and Mrs. Kiyoko Morita,Director of the Mass-Hokkaido Soceity in Massachusetts also joined the IYF.  His presentation based on the documentary film dealing with the 12 American prisoners of war in Hiroshima “Paper Lanterns” allowed  the young participants and other participants to re-consider the meaning of  not only “Peace” through education and dialogue, but also the importance of cross-cultural dialogues through cross-cultural intercahnge and educational program like the IYF,Sapporo. It was a fun and memorable event– invititng friends from Massachusetts.

…..We also enjoyed many wonderful reunions with Japanese friends, visiting their homes or meeting over dinners, catching up on news both political (mostly terrifying) and personal (inspiring and enriching).

High on our list of memories of the trip was an International Youth Forum in Sapporo, where a screening of “Paper Lanterns” to about 200 high-school and college  students launched a fascinating three-hour discussion. Meeting with students in breakout groups, both of us were moved and inspired by their responses to the film, involving  aspirations for the future of Japan and their concerns about nuclear weapons.  

Despite the daily threat from North Korea, a short distance across the sea from their homes, these students were unanimous in wanting Japan to be nuclear-free. Inspired by the film, their comments extended far beyond their own country: all people throughout the world should cherish peace, free from threats of another terrible nuclear bomb…(Peter Grilli)

To keep the AJSH’s ties with our Sister State Massachusetts going，we invited our close and dear friends from Boston, Massachusetts—Mr. Peter Grilli— Prisident Emeritus of Boston Japan Society and a former studetnst of Dr. Edwin.O. Reishauerr at Harvard— and his wife Suzan, and later Mrs. Kiyoko Morita for “The 3rd International Youth Forum, Sapporo” and the Welcoming Evening Reception  held at Keio Plaza’s Rm.Miyabi.

2017年11月5日（日）京王プラザホテル札幌にて，北海道の姉妹州のマサチューセッツからピーター・グリリー（ボストン日本協会理事長・ハーバード大学のエドウィン・ライシャワー教授の教え子の一人）と奥様のスーザンさん，それに現マサチューセッツにあるマ州北海道協会の代表の森田喜代子先生をお迎えし，二つの記念事業を開催した。午後には高校，大学，HIS（北海道インタナショナル・スクール）の学生達と選抜された本協会のメンバーたちを対象とした講演会・グループ・フォーラム・デイスカションに参加下さった。大変興味深く素晴らしい講演の後も，学生達と共に日米の被爆者の歴史的問題，今後の未来の日米関係，文化・教育交流等についてデイスカッションに在札幌アメリカ総領事館のライチェル・ブルーネット・チェン首席領事らと共に参され，異文化教育交流を深められた。　伊藤義郎会長からも英語によるコメントを頂き，ヤング世代にとっても励みとなった。 ピーターさんからも「札幌の次世代の若者達の被爆者問題，そのた日米，世界の問題や関心事についての発表や率直な多くの意見に勇気づけられた」との感想が届いた。　*なお，第３回「国際ユースフォラーム札幌」については，別のセクションの第３回「国際ユースフォラーム札幌」の箇所をクリックし御覧下さい！

ピーターさんマサチューセッツ・グループは，夕方に同会場で開催された「歓迎レセプション」にも参加され，本協会会員らと共に二つの姉妹州の発展と今後の日米の友好・親善の絆を深めることも誓った。

A guest speaker, Peter-san made a wonderfully interesting  presentation in plain English and then joined the group discussion sharing his views with tne young student body.  Mrs. Rachel Brunett-Chen, the principal officer at Sapporo’s American Consulate General also cntributed.  Mr. Yoshiro Ito gave us a surprize comment entirely in English.   On the evening of November 5th, the AJSH’s Welcome Reception was held in the same room–inviting our friends from Massachustts mentioned Obove–confrming strong friendly and strong ties between Hokkaido and Masachusetts.　Peter-san was very much impressed with and encouraged by candid opinions expressed by the young turks in Sapporo.    For Further informarion on the 3rd International Youth Forum, see another section— clicking the 3rd International Youth Forum, Sapporo(  第３回「国際ユースフォラーム札幌」)

A guest speaker: Mr. Masanori Matsui(President of Television Hokkaido)

On September 21(Thu) at Park Terrace(Sapporo Park Hotel), Mr. Masanori Matsui gave an  exciting and interesting talk on American  politics, diplomacy and social changes—based on his own experiences

working for the NIKKEI,Washington D.C. as a foreign correnspodance . Inasmuch as the NIKKEI”s office directly facing the White House, Mr. Matsui as the head of the NIKKEI had an opportunity to observe what was going on at the White House.too.

Besides his talk, a new individual youth member, Haruna Nakamura–who studied at Ball State University in Indianna on an exchange student representing Sapporo University–was a happy addition to the AJSH.   She was  introduced by Dr. Haruno Ogasawara, her mentor.

９月２１日（木）のゲストスピーカーに長年（1980年代），米国首都ワシントンで日本経済新聞の支局長としても活躍した松井　正憲テレビ北海道新社長を講演者にお招きした。首都ワシントンの日経事務所はホワイトハウスの正面にあるため，松井社長はファーストハンドでホワイトハウスの内情を観察できた海外特派員でもあった。

今回も米国インデイアナ州立大学ボール校に留学軽軽のある中村ハルカさん（札幌大学でもアイヌ文化英語で紹介する研究に取り組んでいた。）が個人会委員として入会下さり，指導教授でもある小笠原はるの副実行委員長から紹介された。
