5/21(Thu)新会長に安田光春氏就任&M.Yasuda Was Named New President

  • 2026年の5月21日総会で、新会長に安田光春氏が就任New Pres. M. Yasuda Elected at G.Assembly   2026年度の総会で新会長に安田光春氏が推薦され就任された。なお、安田新会長は、北洋銀行の取締役会長であり札幌商工会議所会頭でもある。
  • 　総会の式典あと、安田会長はスピーチを行い、当協会の発展のために全力を尽くすと語られた。また、岩田圭剛元会長は名誉会員として推薦され承認された。また、新役員の副会長に新たに就任されたのは長沼昭夫理事と西山隆司理事、また新理事には新会員で伊藤組ホールディング会長の伊藤美香子氏と北洋銀行副頭取の増田仁志氏が推薦され就任された。
  •  At the May 2026 General Assembly of the America-Japan Society of Hokkaido, Mr. Mitsuharu Yasuda was formally approved as the new president. He is the chairman of the North Pacific Bank (Hokuyo Bank),and Chairman of Sapporo Chamber of Commerce.Mr.Akio　Naganuma and　Takasi Nishiyama were selected as new Vice Presidents.
  • 総会で新たに提案された案件が二点あった。一つめが、事務局の仕事の負担を軽減するために、これまで年間６回開催されていた例会数を４回に変更にされること。二つめが、物価高騰に伴う例会の食事代の値上げについて報告があり承認された。ランチ代金が4,000円から5,000円にディナー代金が6,000円から7,000円に変更となり承認された。
  • Following the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Yasuda promised to make the utmost effort for the growth of the AJSH. Former President Keigou Iwata became an honorary member of the association and . Ms. Mikako Ito, Chair person  of Ito-gumi  Holdings and Mr. Hisotshi Masuda, Vice President of Hokuyo Bank–wereas chosen as  new board members.
    Two changes in the society’s organizational structure were announced. Due to the heavy burden on AJSH staff members, the number of regular meetings will be reduced from six to four times annually. In addition, the fee for lunch meetings is raised to 5,000 yen/member and the dinner fee is 7,000 yen/member. The increases are due to rising commodity prices, and we ask for all members’ understanding.

3/19(Th.)スタンフォード大教授の道への提言 Stanford Prof.Dasher Talks for Hokkaido

３月１９日（木）の午餐会に米国の名門スタンフォード大学のアジア・米国技術経営研究センター所長で日本政府のスタートアップ・ビジネスのコンサルタント業務も行っているリチャードB・ダッシャー教授が、東京・札幌間を「とんぼ返り」で特別講演を流ちょうな日本語で行って下さった。Professor Richard B・Dasher, Director of US-Asia Tecnology Management Center at Standord University made a special presentation–making a quick Shuttle Dipmacy traveling between Tokyo and Sapporo.

 

ダッシャー教授は、特に北海道におけるイノベーション主導型成長のためのエコシステム構築構築：シリコンバレーの過去と現代から学ぶ教訓」にフォーカスを当て、熱っぽく語って下さった。

The focus was “How to build an Ecosystem for Innovation-Driven Growth in Hokkaido:Lessons from the Past and Present of Sillicon Valley.”

ラピダスを中心としたサプライチェーン構築だけでは、北海道がイノベーション主導型経済の恩恵を十分に享受することはできない。高度は所得水準を持つ先進経済が成長を続け、競争力を維持するには、イノベーション主導型経済が唯一の道であることを強調された。Prof. Dasher emphasized that advanced manufacturing in an economy is a very good thing. However, Hokkaido needs to build up other capabilities as well, and create an ecosystem for innovation-driven growth.  He used some examples from the history of Silicon Valley to point out what kind of capabilities and also system are needed for Hokkaido to realize its full potential.

Feb.5 Amb.G.Glass, Mrs. Glass joined ’26 New Year Special event with his delegation

雪まつり期間の2月 5日（木）、駐日米国大使のジョージ・グラス大使とメアリー夫人が米高官ご一行を伴い、当協会の新年祝賀歓迎午餐会に参加下さった。大使具夫妻は、札幌市の姉妹都市ポートランド・オレゴンにも在住されたことのある根っからのオレゴニアンである。（道産子のような存在）。そのため、100人以上が参加した今回の特別例会では、熱狂的な歓迎を受けた。

It  was our honor to welcome  Ambassador(Amb.) George Glass and Mrs. Mary Glass, together with several US  delegation members at the AJSHokkaido’s New Year’s Special luncheon 2026.  As they both are Oregonians and used to live in Portland, Oregon which is  Sapporo’s Sister City, Portland Oregon, a round of applause  echoed the entire  room  Ginsen.  On behalf of President Iwata, Shoji Mitarai, Vice President extended his deepest gratitude for Amb. Glass’s unwavering contributions and efforts fostering the cultural exchange, economic and diplomatic relations.

当日は、御手洗副会長が急用の入った岩田会長に代わり、日・英で歓迎の挨拶をされ、グラス大使のこれまでの日米の文化事業、経済分野、外交関係の分野での功績をたたえたスピーチを行った。さらに、日米関係の今後の発展と、1959年に締結し今日まで続く札幌とポートランド姉妹都市関係、昨年３５周年記念式典を祝ったマサチューセッツ州と北海道の姉妹州関係、加えて2017年に締結されたハワイと北海道の友好州関係の絆の重要性についても言及された。

さらに今年７月４日、アメリカ合衆国は建国２５０周年の記念式典を行う。そのため、今回アメリカの政府高官グループがグラス大使に同伴し、我々とその歓びを分かち合うため来道し、本日新年祝賀午餐会も参加下さった。感謝申し上げたい。

Mr. Mitarai also mentioned that Amb. Glass’s visit to Sapporo and Hokkaido did underscore the deep and abiding connections not only between the U.S. and Japan, but also  between Portland, Oregon and Sapporo which formed the  Sister City  relations in 1959. Additionally,  Massachusetts and Hokkaido celebrated their 35the Sister State anniversary last year. Furthermore,  Aloha State Hawaii has been related to Hokkaido as Friendly State since 2017.

It’s necessary to add that as the United States will celebrate 250 years of Independence, a group of  US delegation members accompanied Amb. Glass to share this momentous occasion with us. We do appreciate their presence here today.

読売新聞北海道支社の村尾新一社長の乾杯の挨拶後に昼食会が開かれ、　後半には馬場俊ご夫婦の率いる「琴友会」メンバーによる新年の曲、並びに北海道伝統の「ソーラン節」を含む名曲の演奏に大使ご夫妻、並びに会場の参加者たちも演奏家たちの北海道の伝統音楽に 魅了されていた。

ところで、グラス大使ご夫妻は名スキヤーとして知られている。そのため、今回の北海道滞在期間中に北海道で大いにスキーを楽しみ満喫された。

After Mr. Shinichi Murao—President of the Yomiuri Newspaper Hokkaido branch–proposed a toast for this special event, we held luncheon in honor of  Ambassador Glass and his wife.  “Kinyuukai(Japanese harp friends’ association)” led by Takashi Baba and his wife entertained the Ambassador, U.S. delegation and the entire audience. The entire audience was lured by their traditional Hokkaido music performance.

Incidentally, both Amb. Glass and Mrs. Glass have been known as very avid skiers. Thus, they enjoyed their time skiing during their  stay in Hokkaido.

Nov.20(Thu.)アーリークリスマス・イブニング・ディナー

当日の講演者は、アメリカ大使館政務担当公使で外交官のクリス・アリソン氏が、たいへんお忙しい中、ご来札され「第二次トランプ政権における日米関係」　をテーマに、ご講演いただきました。現在の強固な日米関係への理解が一層深まるお話に出席者一同、熱心に耳を傾けました。

Our guest speaker for the Early Christmas Evening Dinner was US diplomat, Mr. Chris Allison, Minister Councel0r for Political  Economic Affairs. His talk on US-Japan Relations under the the second term Trump administration was very instructive and warmly received the audience.

 

また、ハイキングなどアウトドアを趣味とする公使は、多くの出席者とフレンドリーにお話しいただくなど、とても和やかな例会となりました。オープニングのご挨拶は、西山隆司理事が会長代行で務められました。加えて、共同通信の金子大札幌支社長から乾杯のご発声を頂戴しました。

As Mr. Allison’s avocation is outdoor sports and he himself  is an avid outdoor hiker, he shared his wide variety of outdoor experiences with our members in an amical manner. Mr. Takashi, on the Board(below) offered Mr. Allison a warm welcome on behalf of our President Mr. Keigou Iwata.　Additionally, down the below, Mr. Dai Kaneko newly elected Bureau Chief of Sapporo branch made a proposed toast.

Another highlight on the day during the dinner was a special music performance by a professional jazz pianist Ryuji Terakado–who has been playing jazz music in Sapporo more than 50 years. Our member–the best kept secret jazz  guitarist was our Board member Mr. Yoshihisa Ikeda–whose hobby lies in playing the guitar. They entertained the audience with Christmas songs and standard jazz songs.

Last, not the least,  Yoko Maki, our Board member, gave a few  words thanking Mr. Terakado with honorarium on behalf of our President Keigou Iwata.

9/25(Thu.) ジョン・ローレンスJohn Lawrenceラピダス最新情報プリゼン

9月25日(木・札幌パークホテル）の例会には、半導体メーカーのラピダス社と国内外情報に詳しく、親日派で千歳在住のジョン・ローレンス氏をゲスト・スピーカーにお招きし講演会を開催しました。

Tiny tech, in the form of semiconductors, and how it powers the world was the theme of the Thursday, Sept. 25th Hokkaido Japan-U.S. Association Regular Meeting, as members heard from John Lawrence, a longtime American resident of Japan and semiconductor industry veteran who is one of the leading experts on the semiconductor industry.
With the two-nanometer semiconductor chips scheduled to go into mass production at the Rapidus plant in Chitose in 2027, anticipation is high in Hokkaido, Japan, and around the world that the chips will reboot Japan’s domestic semiconductor manufacturing industry. But how many of us really have an understanding of how this critical technology works?

ローレンズさんは、世界に向けた同産業の未来や戦略について～半導体とあなた～小さな微粒子が、世界にどのようなインパクトを与えるのか？～」についてプリゼンテーションを行って頂きました。

In clear, jargon-free language, Mr. Lawrence took society members through a bilingual PowerPoint of the manufacturing process–from the moment a chip starts as a piece of ultrapure silicon in the form of an ingot, which is refined from sand, through a process that includes being sliced into thin wafers,putting layers of substrate, as well as conducting and insulating materials, to imprinting circuit patterns, to the final cleaning and inspection process to ensure there is no dust. Even a piece of dust 2 mn wide can damage the entire wafer, Mr. Lawrence said.

講演のハイライトは、ローレンズさんは、持参し参加者たちにプレゼントされた半導体チップをもとにプリゼンテーションを、わかりやすく展開されたことにつきます。今後、日本の大手企業のキャノンやソフトバンク、トヨタその他が出資する北海道発のラピダスの動きが世界でも注目されています。今回のローレンスさんをゲスト・スピーカー として招くにあたっては、その準備と英文編集等で、本協会の会員でザ・ジャパンタイムズの上特派員のエリック・ジョンストンさんにお世話になり感謝申し上げます。
The highlight of the presentation came when Mr. Lawrence asked participants to observe the tiny chip and small piece of paper taped inside the small, clear plastic box that had been on the tables in front of each participant. Imagine, he said, if that tiny little chip, not much larger than a large grain of sand, were blown up to an area that matches the land area of Japan, compressed into a square. That would be a chip 614.8 X 614.8 square kilometers–roughly the distance between the Sapporo Park Hotel and Minami Soma, Fukushima Prefecture going north to south.
On a chip the size of Japan, then, what would be the equivalent of two nanometers, which is what Rapidus is developing? Just 8.2 centimeters!
Mr. Lawrence also spoke on what was going on in other parts of Japan where semiconductor manufacturing plays an important role in the local economy. But he quoted a warning of a Kumamoto prefectural assemblyman who noted that while it was easy to set up a semiconductor factory if the government gives you money, staffing is impossible without a local investment in people.
But in a sense, this is a form of “good trouble” for local businesses, as it spurs older, stagnant economies to reinvent themselves.　All of Hokkaido looks forward to the Rapidus project and hopes that it will be the centerpiece of a larger economic revitalization effort. Thanks to Mr. Lawrence’s excellent presentation, Hokkaido Japan-America Society members have a much better understanding of the semiconductor industry itself.　We appreciate Eric Johnston(Senior National Correspondent of The Japan Times & our member) for his help and cooperation  for inviting John Lawrence as a guest speaker and his editorial work .
