５月２３日（木）の総会では、先ず杉野 豊先生が率いる 北海道インターナショナルスクールのビッグ・バンドスタイルの学生バンドによる演奏会で幕開けとなった。オープニングは、1952年のジーン・ケリー主演映画主題歌の「雨に唄えば」とサウンド・オブ・サイレンスの映画の中でも披露さえた「マイ・フェイボリット・シング」、それにアンコール曲に観客たちは魅了された。総会前に理事会が開催された。今回の議長は、急な所用ができた伊藤会長に代わり、加森副会長が務め、総会も無事終了した。

また今回の総会には、７月に札幌を離れ首都ワシントンに向かわれるレイチェル・ブルネット・チェンから「お別れのお言葉」を頂いた。長きにわたり御家族とともにスキー部会の事業に会員と共に参加頂き、また特に、次世代を担う若者たちの「国際ユースフォーラム」には多大な支援と協力を得たことは、大変意義深いものがある。若者たちへのエールも頂き、心より感謝申し上げたい。

On May 23, 2019(Thu.)  the 2019 General Assembly was held on the 3rd floor Ginsen at Sapporo Grand Hotel.

Before the General Assembly HIS’s big band style Jazz band led by Mr. Yuaka Sugita put on a very good show.  They played such famous movie music–“Sing in the Rain” sung by Gene Kelley in 1952, “My Favorite Thing out of the movie Sound of Music  and an encore number.  The audience was very much enchanted by their marvelous performance.   As Mr. Yoshiro Ito, President of the AJSH was out of town, the General Assembly was opened with Vice President, Mr.Kimito Kamori in the chair.

Rachel Brunette-Chen–who will be leaving for Wssington,D.C. with her family–gave us a heat-warming farewell speech. It was our grea pleasue to have her here in Sapporo. It is nice to recall her conributions with her family joinng us for skiing and other events. We were very much struck with her delicaed efforts to make International Youth Forum(IYF) more meaningful and enjoyable, and prductive for the next generation of Japanese young turks. They do appreciae her participation in the IYF and encouraging messages to them. We miss her and her family very much! We wish them the bestof luck in a new place in the nations’s capital!

２月７日（木）の新年祝賀会はビッグ・サプライズの連続であった。アメリカからの特別ゲスト・スピーカーとは、何とウイリアム F.ハガティ駐日米国大使であった。奥様と四人のお子様は70回目の札幌雪まつりを満喫中、ハガティ大使は、105名の会員の待つ、札幌グランドホテルのGinsenの会場に正午に到着。到着後、自ら伊藤会長と共に会場に入る一人一人の会員に、こやかに握手しながらテネシー・スタイルで会員を歓迎して下さった。(本来は、本協会会員が大使を歓迎するはずなのであるが。。。）

ハガティ大使は、日米の交流と関係強化に関するスピーチの中で自らが、以前日本にボストンコンサルティングの役員として滞在した経験があり、日本の企業何社をテネシー州に誘致したこと。カレーライスが大好物であるのと同様、北海道が大好きであることを外交面の話もユーモアを交えて話された。特に、本協会の次世代に繋ぐ有意義な事業である「国際ユースフォーラム」を高く評価下さった。

ザ・ダンディ・フォーの「テネシーワルツ」と「好きです札幌」に魅了された大使は、その後ステージ上でも伊藤会長と会員全員らと共に小笠原はるの会員のピアノに合わせ「テネシーワルツ」を合唱され、思わぬハッピーなビッグ・サプライズとなった。（ちなみに、次第には、大使はステージ上では、お歌いにならないことが明記されていた。） ＊以下の画像写真を「クリック」すれば、鮮明なオリジナル・サイズの画像に拡大され御覧できます。）

What a big surprise!  On February 7,  the special  guest speaker was Ambassador William F. Hagerty who rushed to the Rm. Ginsen and joined the AJSH’s New years’ celebration party—while his wife and four children  were enjoying  themselves  at the site of  the 70th Sapporo Snow Festival.

Ambassador Hagerty’s speech centered around the importance of U.S,-Japan relations . He also touched upon his life experiences staying Tokyo as a member of the Boston Consulting firm—helping some of the Japanese firms invest in the State of Tennessee. His favorite food is curry and rice. By the same token, his favorite place in Japan is Hokkaido.

Additionally, he  highly spoke of the AJSH’s new venue for the next generations “International Youth Forum,Sapporo”

The Dandy Four(a famous Hokkaido’s male vocal (chorus)  group entertained Ambassador singing “Tennessee Waltz,” Sukidesu Sapporo(I love Sapporo.”  Another big surprise came when the Ambassador came up to the stage along with our Chair Yoshiro Ito and several members of the AJSH and started singing ” Tennessee Waltz” to the piano accompaniment by Haruno Ogaswara. According to the proceedings, he was not supposed to sing a song on the stage. It was indeed another Big  Happy   Surprise to the each member of the audience! 想定外の地震とブラック・アウト停電から２週間後の９月２０日、「癒し」も含めた「秋のジャズ演奏会の夕べ」イブニング・ディナーが札幌プリンスホテル・国際パミール「美瑛」で開催された。ゲストには名ジャズベース演奏者で本協会の会員の矢木章をお迎えし、トークも交えた「枯れ葉」、ボサノバ、ブルース曲によるコンサートが行われた。演奏は、ジョン・リース元米国総領事が在任中に結成されたThe Sapporo TOMODACHI Jazz Trio。ベース担当とトークは矢木彰、ピアノは小笠原はるの先生、ドラムスは御手洗昭治 専務、それにトランペットの浮田俊也（株）ソーホ―社長の友情出演があった。

The gist of Mr. Yoshiro Ito’s memorandum read by Shoji Mitarai,Executive Director:  September 20 marked two weeks since the aftemath of two unexpected incidents–September 6  earth quake which ripped through Hokkaido and the electric power  failre(black out) in all homes in Hokkaido.  These incidents were very much in the news in the entire world.

On Sept.20(Thu.), to heal the wounds and minds of people,including the AJSH’ members, Autumn Evening Jazz Concert was held  in Rm Biei at Sapporo Prince Hotel.  The Sapporo TOMODACHI Jazz Trio–formed by John Ries, the former American Consul General,Sapporo–contibuted and played  Autumn Leaves, Bosanoba number Wave and blues My Foolish Heart. The AJSH’s members—Akira Yabi(Bass) Haruno Ogasawara(piano), Shoji Mitarai(on the Drums) and a surprise guest trumpet player also joined the Trio.

(1)今回、被災された方々への心からの御見舞い、並びに北海道全地域と被災地の一日も早い復興を心から願うこと、(2)日本赤十字・北海道支部長でもある本協会の伊藤会長からの被災地厚真町までの激励訪問について、また(3)当地への物資配送、救護活動、募金運動などを率先し指導に携わった報告を、御手洗専務が急遽上京された伊藤会長に代わって代読。 なお、今回の被害についてのお見舞いメッセージと励まし文 が全国日米協会連合の藤崎一郎会長 、元札幌ロアメリカンセンター館長のマーク・デービッドソン、ジャパン・タイムズのエリック・ジョンストン、また遠くアメリカからは、全米米日協会連合のピーター・ケリー会長、元米国商務省・現　米国先端政策研究所上級研究員のグレン・フクシマ氏、元ハワイ米日協会理事長のレニー・ヤジマ氏、マサチュイーセッツ・北海道協会の森田喜代子会長などからも届いた。

乾杯の御発声とお言葉は、今年４月に読売新聞北海道支社長に就任された西嶌一泰氏、同じく９月に新しく就任された米国総領事館のライアン・イングラシア新領事から新任の御挨拶を賜った。

On behalf of President Yoshiro Ito–who flew over to Tokyo out of urgency–Shoji Mitarai,Executive Director read a message paying a trubute not only to those who lost their lives,but also who were affected by the big September 6 earth quake and electric black out as well.  While the electricity restored,  Mr. Ito wholeheartedly  whished a speedy  recovery of peoples’ normal lives in every respect and normalization of transportation systems throuout Hokkaido.    As Chief of the Hokkao Red Cross, Mr. Ito rushed over to Atsuma town–the most deversted  area. He also dipatched rescue operation teams–who brought food items,medicare materals, and, and made a fund-raising campaign.  Such  friends and associates of ours—-President of NAAJS Ichiro Fujisaki, Mark Davidson, the former Director of  Sapporo American Center, Erick Johnston of The Japan Times  in Tokyo and Peter Kelley, Chair of NAJAS, Glen Fukushima, a fomer Deputy Assistant at  USTR and currently a senior fellow of Center for American Progress, Lenny Yajima, former President of Japan-America Society of Hawaii, and Chair, Kiyoko Morita  of Massachusetts-Hokkaido Association in MA also sent us heartfelt symathy messages and condolences.

Mr. Kazuhiro Nishijima, Chief Executive pf the Yomiuri Newspaper,Hokkaido Branch made a toast and offered a few words.  A newly arrived Consul, Mr. Ryan Ingrassia gave a short speech and  greetings.

2018年7月26日に札幌グランドホテル「金枝の間」において、株式会社「きのとや」の長沼　昭会長をゲスト・スピーカーにお迎えしてイブニング・ディナー講演会を開催した。講演タイトルは、『若き日の想い出～アメリカ旅行』。長沼会長の25歳の時に初渡米されグレイハウンド・バス（99日間のパス購入）を利用し、紹介されたアメリカのホストファミリーを頼りにミシガン州のデトロイト、コロラド州、ニューヨーク州その他の州はむろん、カリフォルニア州にお住まいのお姉様にも会いにサンタ・バーバラで過ごした若かりし頃の氏想い出、それに「武勇伝」を楽しく語って頂いた。　伊藤会長はじめ会員達も長沼会長のチャレンジ精神と冒険心、それにアメリカのホストファミリーの心温まるホスピタリティを通して得た長沼会長の貴重な体験談を伺うことができた。　　　Mr.Akio Naganuma,Chairman of  the well-known conferctionary firm “Kinotoya” gave us a marvelous life story visiting many parts of the United States at the age of 25–his memorable experiences and hospitalities he had received from American host families–in his youth. He ventired out to travel Michigan, Colorado, New York vis Grayhound bus(99 days free pass) and stayed at American host family homes. Hie story also included his brief stay at his elder sister’s home in Santa Barabara in California.    His venturous Saga tremendously enchanted not only Mr. Yoshiro Ito,Chair of the AJSH,but also every member of the audiencend

On November 5(Sun.) 2017,　”Two Big Events Were Held”

To keep the AJSH’s ties with our Sister State Massachusetts going，we invited our close and dear friends from Boston, Massachusetts—Mr. Peter Grilli— Prisident Emeritus of Boston Japan Society and a former studetnst of Dr. Edwin.O. Reishauerr at Harvard— and his wife Suzan, and later Mrs. Kiyoko Morita for “The 3rd International Youth Forum, Sapporo” and the Welcoming Evening Reception  held at Keio Plaza’s Rm.Miyabi.

2017年11月5日（日）京王プラザホテル札幌にて，北海道の姉妹州のマサチューセッツからピーター・グリリー（ボストン日本協会理事長・ハーバード大学のエドウィン・ライシャワー教授の教え子の一人）と奥様のスーザンさん，それに現マサチューセッツにあるマ州北海道協会の代表の森田喜代子先生をお迎えし，二つの記念事業を開催した。午後には高校，大学，HIS（北海道インタナショナル・スクール）の学生達と選抜された本協会のメンバーたちを対象とした講演会・グループ・フォーラム・デイスカションに参加下さった。大変興味深く素晴らしい講演の後も，学生達と共に日米の被爆者の歴史的問題，今後の未来の日米関係，文化・教育交流等についてデイスカッションに在札幌アメリカ総領事館のライチェル・ブルーネット・チェン首席領事らと共に参され，異文化教育交流を深められた。　伊藤義郎会長からも英語によるコメントを頂き，ヤング世代にとっても励みとなった。 ピーターさんからも「札幌の次世代の若者達の被爆者問題，そのた日米，世界の問題や関心事についての発表や率直な多くの意見に勇気づけられた」との感想が届いた。　*なお，第３回「国際ユースフォラーム札幌」については，別のセクションの第３回「国際ユースフォラーム札幌」の箇所をクリックし御覧下さい！

ピーターさんマサチューセッツ・グループは，夕方に同会場で開催された「歓迎レセプション」にも参加され，本協会会員らと共に二つの姉妹州の発展と今後の日米の友好・親善の絆を深めることも誓った。

A guest speaker, Peter-san made a wonderfully interesting  presentation in plain English and then joined the group discussion sharing his views with tne young student body.  Mrs. Rachel Brunett-Chen, the principal officer at Sapporo’s American Consulate General also cntributed.  Mr. Yoshiro Ito gave us a surprize comment entirely in English.   On the evening of November 5th, the AJSH’s Welcome Reception was held in the same room–inviting our friends from Massachustts mentioned Obove–confrming strong friendly and strong ties between Hokkaido and Masachusetts.　Peter-san was very much impressed with and encouraged by candid opinions expressed by the young turks in Sapporo.    For Further informarion on the 3rd International Youth Forum, see another section— clicking the 3rd International Youth Forum, Sapporo(  第３回「国際ユースフォラーム札幌」)
