7 月16日（木）の例会には、阿部 晃士札幌ドーム社長をゲストスピーカーにお招きし、北海道発展構想 Dreams Move Againを柱に、”自立を経営”を目指すための「第２の創生戦略」について語って頂いた。

The July 16th meeting of the America-Japan Society of Hokkaido at the Park Hotel offered members a night of learning how a local landmark is being revitalized and listening to cool music on a warm evening.

Sapporo Dome President Koji Abe was the guest speaker. He spoke about how he helped stem the tide of red ink at the famous dome and bring it back in the black. 

 
Abe worked for Japan Travel Bureau in Hong Kong for two years and then JTB Australia for one year, where he learned global business strategies and applied them to Sapporo Dome’s business. He spoke primarily about how to revitalize the Hokkaido economy, how to do it self-sufficiently, and the meaning of the dome’s slogan “Dreams Move Again.” 
 

阿部社長は、JTB香港に2年間、JTBオーストラリアに１年間勤務された。帰国後は北海道広域代表を勤められ、その後、赤字経営であった札幌ドームを黒字に変身させたことでニュースに取り上げられ話題の人となった。

第2部のサマー・クールジャズ演奏会では、ザ・札幌トモダチジャズクオーテットが演奏を披露。プロのピアニスト寺門さんとべ―スの松嶋さんと共に登場したのが、何と「隠れキリシタン」演奏者の御手洗副会長（ドラムス担当）と池田理事（ジャズギター担当）で観客たちを驚かせた。“A列車で行こう”の演奏以外に、御手洗副会長がドラマーとヴォーカリストとしてエルビス“・プレスリーの”好きにならずにいられない”、“All Of ME”、アンコール曲 ” Fly Me To The Moon” を披露し会場を沸かせた。「次回は阿部社長にお願いして、是非札幌ドームでの演奏を！」のエールも送られた。

Abe’s presentation was followed by a dinner show. The Sapporo TOMODACHI Jazz Quartet entertained the startled audience, playing famous jazz standards like “Take the A Train”.  
 
Society Vice President Shoji Mitarai was behind the drum kit while board member Hirohisa Ikeda played guitar, accompanied by a professional jazz pianist and bassist.  In addition to showing off his drumming skills, Mr. Mitarai sang Elvis Presley’s ”  I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”  as well as “All of Me” and “Fly Me To The Moon.” 
 
All to rapturous applause and appreciation. We hope that the Sapporo TOMODACHI Jazz Quartet will soon be able to convince Mr. Abe to host them as a headliner at Sapporo Dome. Thanks also go to Eric Johnston.
