11月 21日（木・夕）には、「アーリー・クリスマス・ディナー講演会」が、京王プラザホテル札幌の「扇の間」(3F)で開催された。   November’s Early Christmas Dinner and a Lecture Forum was held in Rm. “Ohgi“ at the Keio Plaza Sapporo on the evening of November 21(Thu.).

当協会の会員でジャパン・タイムズ上級特派員のエリック・ジョンストン氏と共同通信の元ワシントン特派員で現在札幌支社長の木下英臣氏が、今回の米大統領選挙の勝因を分けた要因、新大統領の抱負、日米関係に影響を与える米国の政策、外交、トランプ大統領と石破首相との関係について、スクリーンを通して語って頂いた。新情報が満喫の刺激ある講演であり秘話も聴け好評であった。最後に大竹千夏理事から12月16日から 12月2日まで「ル・トロワ７階（大通西１丁目」で開かれるクリスマス・ハワイアン・フェアについてお声がけがあった。

Speakers included Mr. Eric Johnston, Senior National Correspondent of The Japan Times and Hidemi  Kinoshita, a former Washington D.C. Bureau Chief  of KYODO and currently  President of  KYODO Sapporo gave us very lucid, informative  and brilliant  presentations.

Their presentations covered the results of the 2024 Presidential election–why Vice President Harris lost and why Mr. Trump defeated Ms. Harris. They also touched on the possible future of U.S.-Japan relations under Trump, especially in terms of diplomacy, and how Trump and Prime Minister Ishiba may establish a personal relationship.

Lastly, Ms. Chinatsu Ohtake–our Board member– made a pitch for Christmas Hawaiian Fair to be held at Ru Torowa(7th FL in Ohdori West 1)” Dec.16 through Dec.22.

日米協会では１１月１７日（日）に京王プラザ３F[扇の間]において、ジャパン・タイムズの上級特派員のエリック・ジョンストン氏をゲストスピーカーにお招きし「第８回国際ユースフォーラム(IFY)札幌」を公益社団法人北海道国際交流・協力総合センター（HIECC）と共催し開催。

On November 17(Sun,）, the 8th International Youth Forum(IYF) Sapporo was held at Keio Plaza Hote, Sapporo under the auspices of the America Japan Society of Hokkaido and cosponsored by HIECC, and we invited Mr. Eric Johnston, Senior National Correspondence of THE JAPAN TIMES.

エリックさんは、米国のピッツバーグ大学時代に日本語を勉強したのがきっかけで日本文化や伝統、それに社会に興味を持ち大学卒業後の1988年に来日し、京都に住み始める。英字版の Japan Amusement Monthlyの編集長を務めた後、1994年には大阪の毎日新聞社（The Mainichi Daily News‘ Osaka ）に記者として勤める。同社では1994年に広島で開催されたアジア大会、1995年には神戸大震災並びに 大阪APEC首脳会議、1996年にはクリントン大統領来日などの記事を担当する。その後、1997年に The Japan Timesに移り京都やコペンハーゲンで開催された環境問題会議、オバマ大統領の広島訪問、さらに安倍首相のホノルルで開催されたパールハーバー記念式典にも同伴し取材記事を担当する。2016年には、北海道で開催された「先進７か国洞爺湖首脳会談」。2019年に大阪で開催された「20か国首脳会談」にも出席し取材活動を行った。2022年には、会社から許可を得て関西から札幌に移り住み、現在、北海道の社会文化、政治、北海道の魅力に関する記事を執筆し紹介されています。

After graduating from the University of Pittsburg, Mr. Eric Jonston moved to Kyoto in 1988. Working at Osaka-based publisher of trade magazines, He helped the owners create an English-language version of their magazines called Japan Amusement Monthly.
In 1994, Eric joined the staff of the Mainichi Daily News‘ Osaka-bureau as a reporter/translator. He covered the 1994 Asia Games in Hiroshima, the 1995 Hanshin earthquake that devastated Kobe, and the 1995 Osaka APEC summit. In 1996, he reported on U.S. President Bill Clinton’s visit to Tokyo, traveled to the UK, Belgium, Holland, Austria and Germany for a series on Japan-European Union relations, and went to Washington D.C. in November 1996 for the U.S. presidential election.

Eric moved to the Osaka bureau of The Japan Times in 1997. He spent 25 years covering Osaka, Kyoto, and Kansai-area politics and society, and attended a wide range of international conferences, especially on climate change (including the Kyoto Protocol conference in 1997 and the Copenhagen Accord conference of 2009) as well as the 2000, 2008, and 2016 Group of Seven (G7) summits and/or ministerial conferences in Okinawa, Hokkaido, and Ise, respectively.  President Barack Obama`s historic visit to Hiroshima, and then traveled to Hawaii for Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe’s historic visit to Pearl Harbor in December of that same year.　In 2019, following his role in helping lead the paper’s coverage of the Group of 20 Summit in Osaka, Eric was named Senior National Correspondent of The Japan Times. He began covering national politics, writing feature stories and “evergreen” content about the ruling and opposition parties as well as filing daily political news reports. In 2022, seeking a new challenge, Eric requested, and was granted, a move to Sapporo, a city he had visited on business and pleasure for two decades. He continues to write about national politics but has added Hokkaido regional coverage to his responsibilities.

サプライズ・スピーチを行ってくれた道教育大付属中学3年の伊藤香一さん（下から２番目の写真）が、11月29日に東京で開催された第76回高円宮杯英語弁論大会で、見事優勝し「全国一」を獲得！おめでとうございます！

Kouichi Ito–a 3rd year student at Doh Kyoikudai Fuzoku junior high school gave us a suprise speech–capturedbthe 1st prize at H.I.H.Prince Takamado Trophy 76th All Japan Inter-Middle English Oratorical Contest held in Tokyo on November 29 and became No.1. Congratulations,Kouichi!
